Then and Now Ads

I recently was browsing around a used bookstore in downtown Chattanooga, and stumbled upon what seemed to be hundreds of old issues of Life magazine. I spent quite a bit of time trying to chose just one to purchase (since they ranged in price from $8 - $25/magazine I could only get one). I finally found one - March 29, 1943 SPECIAL ISSUE USSR. I've always been very interested in WWII topics and was fascinated by the articles on Stalin's regime, the political cartoons of Adolf Hitler and the "Thousand Years of Russia's History" timeline near the back of the issue. Along with the actual meat of the magazine, I found the advertisements particularly interesting. While reading through I saw many familiar brands such as Listerine, Pepto Bismol, Campbell's and others. I thought it would be interesting to compare the ads of a few of these ever so popular brands from then and now.

Juxtaposition of Found Line Art

For our first project of the semester, we were assigned to collect line art from various sources (newspapers, yellow pages, magazines etc.) and chose two sets of two images to combine into a creative and interesting design. Here are my final works.

Graphic Design in History

Here's an interesting fact for you: according to an article on graphicdesignblog.org, the famous "Uncle Sam" recruitment poster, designed by Joames Montgomery Flagg, was actually an inspirational version of the British poster by Alfred Leete.

Fine Dining

Since I moved to Chattanooga I have had the opportunity to dine at a couple of the more upscale restaurants in town and have been able to experience first hand the effectiveness of well presented food. While of course ultimately the taste of the dish is the priority for most patrons of a restaurant, I truly believe the presentation itself holds a very close second in the overall experience. The way the food is placed and colors arranged on the plate can truly be a work of art. These are just a few scrumptious dishes that I have found and believe to have exceptional presentation. - yum!
